Periodontal Treatment
Our mouths are filled with bacteria. Many of them are harmless, but a few, such as those associated with tooth decay or gum disease, can do serious damage. These bacteria combine with sugars from the foods we eat to form plaque, a sticky film that forms on teeth. Plaque must be brushed and flossed away daily or it will lead to periodontal disease.Periodontal, or gum, disease has several stages. It begins with red, irritated gums that bleed easily when brushed or flossed, a condition commonly called gingivitis. Gingivitis is reversible with proper treatment, but it can progress into periodontitis, a condition in which the gums pull away from the teeth. Pockets form, where bacteria multiply and thrive. Plaque and tartar can accumulate beneath the gumline, and bone may be lost.
If you are among the three out of four American adults suffering from some form of periodontal disease, the severity of your condition may dictate the treatment our dentist will suggest. Scaling and root planing is a common nonsurgical periodontal treatment. Plaque and tartar will be removed from periodontal pockets along the gumline, and your teeth will be cleaned and smoothed. Our Beverly Hills dentist may also suggest antimicrobial therapy to facilitate healing.
Laser therapy is often used in conjunction with scaling and root planing in periodontal treatment. The laser is used to destroy bad bacteria and remove the biofilm that actually causes the infection. The body’s natural healing process is stimulated, and there is no undue trauma to surrounding tissues.
Surgery is an option in periodontal treatment for those suffering from more extensive gum disease. Pocket reduction procedures, soft tissue grafts, and regenerative procedures may be used to promote healthy tissue growth. The surgical procedure used may vary based on our dentist’s assessment of your oral health and your needs.
Periodontal disease is a serious condition that can have profound consequences for your entire body. It has been linked to diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and pregnancy complications. Periodontal disease may be prevented through proper oral hygiene habits and regular dental cleanings and checkups, but as many as 30 percent of individuals are genetically susceptible.
If you have any symptoms of periodontal disease, such as inflamed or bleeding gums, a receding gumline, or persistently bad breath, our Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist will examine you and explain your periodontal treatment options.
